Alpha-tocopherol is commonly used as vitamin E, however, this form is not typically found itself in nature, always in combination with beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherols, the importance of which is the focus of increasing research interest.

Our product contains vitamin E in the form of a mixture of 4 different tocopherol complexes just as they are present in nature.

The only excipient we use is sunflower oil with a high oleic acid content, pressed from a (non-GMO) type of sunflower seed. This seed has a significantly reduced omega-6 fatty acid content of 1-2% instead of the 20-30% in the traditional sunflower seed. This not only provides greater stability but also protects the omega-6 / omega-3 ratio in our body.

The tocopherols used in the product are derived from non-GMO plants and do not contain soy or other allergens.
For a long time, many manufacturers used tocopherol as vitamin E and unfortunately this is still often the same. Why is this such a big problem?

Many forms (isomers) of vitamin E are known: alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-tocopherols and tocotrienols. In addition, a new type of tocopherol was recently identified in the skin of kiwi fruits. Old, out-of-the-date measurements and their wrong interpretation lead to the conclusion that alpha-tocopherol is the strongest among these, and thus this is the only substance that can be marked as vitamin E on products (this is actually somewhat more complicated, but largely it is so). Because of this, most manufacturers use only alpha-tocopherol as vitamin E - this is what most worth it thanks to its price and the poor regulations. However, alpha-tocopherol does not occur anywhere in nature only by itself, always together with other tocopherols. This can make us suspect that taking vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) without the other tocopherols is “unnatural”.

A study was published already in 1994 that the supplementation of vitamin E and other antioxidants increased the risk of cancer and other diseases among smokers. The results of the SELECT study were published in 2000, where it was revealed that vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol without other tocopherols) significantly increases the risk of prostate cancer. However, they also found that if other tocopherols (particularly gamma) were administered together with alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), the result was a significant decrease in the risk of prostate cancer (to its one-fifth). The results of these two research studies were communicated in the media and by public health services to benefit pharmaceutical companies: we were told not to take vitamins, antioxidants and dietary supplements, as these are harmful. The reality, however, is completely different! In these studies, researchers did not use these various vitamins and antioxidants in their natural form and ratio. Concerning vitamin E, solely alpha-tocopherol was administered in cases when it was found harmful, also its synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol form, and not the natural d-alpha-tocopherol form. It is most likely that if they had used the natural d-form, they would have got the same results, as the problem arises when alpha-tocopherol is taken without the other tocopherols, resulting in an altered ratio of tocopherols in our tissues: alpha increases in comparison with the others (particularly with gamma). Recently it was revealed that gamma-tocopherol has stronger antioxidant properties and more positive effects compared to alpha-tocopherol (for example, it has anti-inflammatory effects via COX-2 inhibition, while alpha does not). As a final result, vitamin E supplementation displaced the gamma-tocopherol (which has better effects) from the bodies of study participants, and this caused the harmful effects. Thus, it is important to choose a vitamin E product that contains vitamin E in a mixture of different tocopherols, and not only in alpha-tocopherol.
Careful! Many products are marked as “natural vitamin E”. These are not any better if they contain only alpha-tocopherol. This only means that, instead of the synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol, they contain the natural d-alpha-tocopherol, but still they are just as harmful since by taking any alpha-tocopherol without the other tocopherols will only displace the more useful forms out of our body.

Current knowledge suggests that the most important effects of mixed tocopherols include but are not limited to the following:

Possible positive effects on the vascular system: It might
• Improve endothelial function: Reduced the harmful effects of elevated blood sugar levels on blood vessels after eating as early as only 5 days after usage.
• Reduce the risk of atherosclerosis.
• By increasing nitrogen oxide levels, it may improve blood circulation.

Other possible positive effects: It may
• Improve liver functions, has a positive effect on cirrhosis and other liver diseases.
• Strengthen immunity, especially in the elderly.
• Have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects.
• Ameliorate respiratory allergies.
• Have a strong antioxidant effect.
• Protect the DNA against radiation, including X-rays.
• Reduce the signs of Alzheimer’s disease and the risk of its occurrence.
• Reduce the occurrence of infections in the upper respiratory tract.

Brief and precise summary of Vitamin E

Vitamin E plays an important role in the satisfactory functioning of the immune system. It boosts the body’s defensive ability, especially in the elderly but it’s also been observed that regular vitamin E supplementation decreases the risk of certain infections in the case of young people as well.

Vitamin E is beneficial, but only in the right form

After discovering that vitamin E acts as an antioxidant it was assumed that it can help prevent several chronic illnesses. Studies have concluded that a higher vitamin E intake significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Researchers aimed at finding an answer to whether vitamin E can assist in cancer prevention as well, however, the answers turned out to be rather mixed and controversial.

About the different forms of vitamin E in general

Vitamin E is one of the fat-soluble vitamins the body needs in order to function properly. When it was discovered nearly 100 years ago it was observed that it improved animals’ fertility: that’s where vitamin E’s other name, tocopherol comes from, in Greek it means birth and pregnancy.
